Bass players are a rare breed.

I’ve been doing some recording recently. New material. I’ve got the recording bug again. It’s been great playing with master drummer Jose Martinez  on my originals. We have tried out two bass players and both were talented but non-camittal. This seems to be a common thread here in south FL. Bass bass bass let’s go! Anyone who wants steady gigs and work should take bass lessons, guitar players, dime a dozen.

New beginnings

We are talking about new beginnings. Focusing on ones passion. Letting the worry’s of the world melt away like wax under your feet then grounding yourself in what you love to do. Keep the flame of intrest alight, it burns deep in your soul.  This cluster of  daily worries clouds our focus, society’s patterns telling us what paths to take for happiness. We look to external pleasures instead of going inside to seek our truth. The quest inside is the  most difficult, unraveling who you are and what you want.

Thanks for coming

Thanks for coming to the bi-annual Bunker South Jam Party. We had a lot of fun.  I would particularly like to extend a warm thanks to Jeff for organizing food and drink. Rock and Roll.

Keep on rocking!

When you teach music two nights a week, play in two cover bands,  play a few gigs a month and record some weekends, there is little time for other activities. With a full time job and two kids under the age of eleven life gets pretty hectic.

Teaching my students is really rewarding. Watching them grow and turn into rockers is an amazing transition to behold.

Playing solo gigs gives me the opportunity to show case my original material as well as test out some new covers. I use this time as a chance to relieve stress and make a few bucks at the same time. People seem enjoy what I play so there is a reward in that activity as well.

My “other” work is based in marine management. Maintaining systems on privet yatchs and doing a lot of mechanical work. Not so rewarding but puts bread on the table so to speak.

Recording is one of my favorite activities. Pro tools is a canvas for musicians.

Durig the week I am so busy I have less family time than I would like. This is the reason it is important for the cover bands maintain a partial income by doing gigs. Recently these bands Junkyard Viking and P Shivers (check them out on ReverbNation.com) have been locked up in the woodshed a little too long. Time to rock ~ out!

Extraterrestrials enter the jam

IMG_0843

When life gets too routine creativity helps break the mold. When work is overbearing and stress is all consuming it’s important to step back and say, “hey I need some space from this, I need some variation”. Turn on your favorite artist, pick up a guitar, listen to something from another culture. I think that’s why Music is so powerful because it can transcend us in one brief moment. It has nostalgic power as well as power to bring you into the present. When I play I’m almost always present. When you listen to the solos of the jazz greats, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Duke Ellington, Wes Montgomery they were all present in the creation of those solos, playing from the heart so to speak. The progression underneath remains the same it has been played time and time again but the solo adds the flavor, the color, the jam. I love music because it’s like a fabric of many colors. I open up and listen to everything, from Amadeus Wolfgang Mozart to Jay Z. I don’t have to like everything I listen too, but all music has something to say, a piece of culture, a fragment of the heart, a touch of someone’s creativity.

I often wonder what it would be like if an alien culture came to earth and brought their music to the jam. Within our own world we have so many variations in music. Different tones, different rhythms, different notes, something that sounds good to me might sound totally off to somebody else. I guess I’m just curious what type of instruments and sounds the extraterrestrials would like to play. Maybe music is a form of healing to them, maybe music is a religion to them, or maybe it’s illegal, perhaps it’s a form of communication. It is basically all of those things to humans. I know all this is out there but what if?

Great Trip to VT

Hi, I just returned from a wonderful trip north. I recorded album at the Bunker and performed a festival with the terrific
“Billy Dub” band. I re-united with Freedom Reign for several jams.  I went tubing on the white river. Good times, great music.

Great Gigs at S3 and Quarter Deck

This weekend was busy with some great shows. First I saw my friends Jeff and Christine (The American Poets) on Thursday night at The Q  bar. Friday I played Quarter deck and Ed and Dave played a good set. Then Saterday Ed and I watched some bands and stayed out way to late at Fat Cats, Pour House and Tarpen Bend in Fort Lauderdale. Then on Sunday I played a gig at S3 which is attached to the Hilton Hotel.
